How to Use This Book
This is Book 1 of the series 'English Exercises for Brilliancy'. It is suitable for advanced F.1 students and average students of higher forms.
This book is designed to help students learn English grammar, usage, and vocabulary through three different forms of exercises: Proofreading, Open Cloze, and M.C. Cloze. For each of these forms, there are ten units, the last of which is an overall revision exercise.
In each unit, there are five sections:
A. |
Passage, Exercises, Vocabulary, Answers and Explanations
Students can refer to 'Vocabulary' to better understand the passage. Hints are given to Proofreading Exercises for students who need a little help to complete the exercise. Terms used in 'Hints' are explained in 'Common Grammar Terms' [Pages C1-C3]. Brief explanations are given in 'Answers and Explanations' [Pages A1-A26] so that students can check and learn the correct answers by themselves.
| B. |
Grammar & Usage
Grammar rules and common usage are discussed in this section with at least one example from the passage. Further examples are given to demonstrate the rules and usage.
| C. |
Sentence Patterns
Some useful sentence patterns in the passage are explained. Further examples are given to help students get familiar with the structures of these sentence patterns.
| D. |
Revision Exercise 1 - Grammar & Usage
All revision exercises in this section are generated from 'Answers and Explanations', 'Grammar and Usage', and 'Sentence Patterns' to consolidate what students have learnt from these sections. [Answers in Pages B1-B6]
| E. |
Revision Exercise 2 - Vocabulary
Exercises in this section are based on 'Vocabulary' below the passage. Students can test their knowledge of the vocabulary. [Answers in Pages B1-B6]

Advice
As you can see, each unit is quite long and intensive. Here is some advice on how to do the exercises in each unit:
| 1. |
Do not try to finish the whole unit in one day. Spread it out over two to five days. It takes time to digest information. You may even want to spend a whole week on one unit to learn the material slowly and carefully. For example:
Day 1: | Do Exercise, then read Answers and Explanations |
Day 2: | Read or re-do the items in which you have made mistakes |
Day 3: | Read Grammar & Usage, Sentence Patterns |
Day 4: | Revise what you have learnt in Days 1 to 3; then do Revision Exercise 1 - Grammar & Usage |
Day 5: | Study vocabulary; then do Revision Exercise 2 - Vocabulary |
|
| 2. |
Think carefully before writing down any answers. Rushing through the exercises will do you no good. Ask yourself why you think your answer is correct. You will learn more in this way when you check your answers and read the explanations.
|
| 3. |
Check each answer and read the explanation slowly and carefully to make sure that you understand why the answer is correct. This is a very important section and you should go through it very slowly.
|
| 4. |
Study 'Grammar & Usage' and 'Sentence Patterns'. Write a few sentences following the examples given in these two sections to consolidate what you have just learnt.
|
| 5. |
Revise Sections A to C before doing any Revision Exercises. As all the revision exercises are generated from the previous sections, it will be helpful if you revise those you have learnt from Sections A to C.
|
| 6. |
Revise the previous nine units before doing the Revision Unit at the end of each Part.
|
If you follow the above advice, we are sure that your English will be much improved after using this book.
Learning is fun. Enjoy it!
